tutoring students in k-5th grade

The curriculum in kindergarten through third grade is designed to provide children with the foundational tools that are necessary in order to become effective lifelong learners. The most common reason that a child struggles in these grades is because he or she is not taught these skills in the way that the child understands. These children will struggle academically if they do not develop these skills. It is imperative that these children receive intervention as early as possible so they do not fall irreparably behind their peers.

There is no reason for this to happen to any child. These children are fully capable of developing these foundational skills if the skills are taught in an explicit and concrete manner.

There are proven methods to teach these children these foundational skills that require a trained educator and the ability to teach on individualized level. Our approach is designed to provide the foundational tools to enable these children to succeed and experience the same success as their peers. We use research based methods that are proven effective in providing students the skills they need in order to be successful in school.

reading

We use Preventing Academic Failure (PAF), a research-based,  multisensory, sequential and direct-instruction approach to teaching reading. This program is based on Orton-Gillingham methods and incorporates all of the important aspects of reading instruction including phonics, reading, handwriting, spelling, and grammar. Reading comprehension is taught explicitly and integrated throughout the lessons.

writing

Powerful writing begins with strong sentences. We use the Hochman Method, a systematic, explicit approach to equipping students with the ability to recognize and construct clear and complex sentences, only then moving on to constructing paragraphs. This method provides explicit and clear sentence construction activities that can be applied to any content and that can be used to assess comprehension of texts or topics.

math

We use Multi Sensory math. This program applies Orton-Gillingham multisensory instructional strategies to mathematics. We use concrete manipulatives to teach mathematical concepts. We then transition students through the representational (pictorial) level of instruction until they are able to deal only with numerals/numbers at the abstract level.

Devorah is an exceptional reading and writing tutor. She has worked with my boys for years who have completely different needs and challenges. They have both made tremendous progress, which we attribute to her talent. Her patience and skill set allow for her to relate to children with varying deficits. I would confidently recommend her as an amazing tutor!

Devorah has transformed my son. For several years we were told that he was struggling in school, but we were the parents who tested him and just couldn't figure out what the problem was. After speaking to many people we realized there was an underlying reading issue. Devorah was referred to us by multiple people as well as my son's school. In the one year she has been seeing my son the improvement is incredible. She took a boy struggling to read, low confidence in his own abilities, to a boy today who is reading with pride .He still has a ways to go and we know that with the continued support she provides him he will get there.

We have used Devorah's tutoring services in both math and reading. She has been a life saver! She comes super prepared, positive and creative with her lesson plans. She is a true advocate for my children and is always ready to speak with any teachers or outside therapists to coordinate which has been so helpful. Devorah is amazing at what she does and she built a rapport with my children very quickly. The results in school were apparent and their confidence blossomed. We couldn't be more thrilled!
